There is a fundamental difference between what forum and "real play" is, and the sort of role play that is usually used in business situations. With role play, not only are your employees expected to take on other roles than their own, when they do take on their own role, what is being looked for is ways that are failing -things that they are doing wrong. Taking on "roles" or "acting" is one of the most frightening things anyone who is not a performer can face - if you add into that equation the knowledge that they are being watched for things that they do wrong, it's no wonder that most people shrink from this type of scenario!
Forum takes a totally different approach - to begin with, professional actors take the roles, leaving your delegates to concentrate on the scenario in front of them.
Secondly, the forum will be an "anti model" - it will show ways in which the issue can be mishandled - leaving your delegates to approach the problem with many possible solutions, rather than worrying about whether they are getting things absolutely right - and of course they have the support of the group, and can try out any idea in a safe environment. They see immediately what works, and because they have created the solutions they own the outcome. This makes it much easier for them to remember what they have learned, and be able to put it into practice in the workplace.
We call it RealPlay(c) because that is what it is...a chance to play around with and find solutions to any issue, whilst providing as real an experience of that issue as possible.
RealPlay (c).... it's not role play!
